Scope and Contents Biographical notes on Aulay MacAulay and Tormod Clèireach [Norman MacIver], telling how Aulay MacAulay died in 1760 and that he was the son of Fear Bhreinish [Dugald MacAulay, Brenish, Eilean Leòdhais/Isle of Lewis]. There is a note of a daughter who left at fifteen years old although it is not clear if it is Dugald or Aulay's daughter. Aulay is noted as having three daughters. Also mentioned is a family member living with Aulay's brother-in-law Rev Mr Hamilton at Hoy, Orkney [Arcaibh]....

The shape and composition of the àiridh is noted along with the measurements of the walls. Carmichael also records his reaction to the building, ' My first fe[e]l[in]g on enter[in]g this airi was that of being scared - face to face with things 1000 y[ea]rs ago - The up end of house so unlike aught I had seen before.'
